Our Curriculum

The largest part of our curriculum in our preschool classes will be in the areas of social and emotional learning. The explorations and activities that will happen on a daily basis will help our students to develop their confidence, communication skills, cooperation and collaboration with others, empathy, and so much more. This will happen throughout the day, from reading and discussions during circle time, to exploring and playing together, working on activities and challenges together, and reflecting during closing circles. We will help our students work together, problem solve, and have the most successful interactions possible (and work through those that are not as positive, still leading to successful interactions in the end!). We will discuss big feelings, and how we label and manage those to the best of our abilities. We will keep track and regularly communicate areas of strength and areas that are challenging to each individual student with their family, as having families and school on the same page is so incredibly important.

In terms of our academic curriculum, it will be very fluid with room for changes on a daily basis. That being said, we also want to make sure your little ones are “ready” for kindergarten, no matter what that looks like for your family (public schools, private schools, homeschool, or other alternative programs). When I say “ready,” we will not be formally testing the learners or making sure they have hit a set list of skills per say, but we will be keeping track of their individual growth and development in the following areas and will also provide regular communication with parents along the way to report progress or any potential challenges that may arise in this part of the curriculum as well.

We will make sure that our learners will have consistent access to activities that promote pre-reading, pre-writing, math, science, art and music. Many of these things will be accessed during play and exploration, with others being directly presented to the students as a choice of activities. Below you will find some examples of different ways your child will participate in our academic curriculum…

Pre-reading

Child Reading in the Grass

*Stories read to them each day during circle time

*Access to books for independent “reading”

*Discussions as a group and individually about stories read (reading comprehension)

*Story telling

*Sequencing (will tie in nicely with science and math)

*Labeling and “reading” the labels in our environment

Pre-Writing

*Lots of fine motor skills practice, often using natural items we find on our explorations, and other times with materials provided by teachers (also ties in nicely with art)

*Drawing

*”Writing” with sticks

*Story telling

*Sequencing

*Labeling

Math

*Collecting natural materials, and using resources provided by teachers, students will match, sort and organize shapes, colors, sizes etc.

*Measuring (length, volume, weight)

*Counting natural resources and teacher-provided materials

*If/when they are ready introducing the concepts of addition/subtraction

Science

*This will come naturally often in our explorations depending on things we find. Examples of things we will explore and learn about are:

*plants

*animals

*bugs

*life-cycles

*weather

*time (also math)

*calendar (also math)

*Lots of messy art projects

*Painting

*Drawing
